World Music Day: Spotlight on O.D.E.N.O.S.E.

Odenose Damisa is not just any woman with a beautiful serenading voice, but also a woman who is a great performer who commands the stage and who controls the crowd.

The world music day can be traced back to France in 1982, when the French Minister of Culture, Jack Lang, dedicated a day to the celebration of music. How cool is that? A classic composer, Maurice Fleuret, was called in to organise a festival in Paris, thus there was the foundation for the celebration of World Music Day. Of course, it is only sensible for the French Institution of Abuja to host an event #fetedelamusique in honor of the World’s Music Day.

Come June 21st, 2025, the world music day which happened at Calypso Garden, Abuja (FCT), had a line up of the Capitals great musicians. CEF Ashanta, Jarell Ebuka, DJ Burna, and Odenose made us remember the impact music has on a community; it brings people together in joy and harmony.

Odenose, the second act of the night (as I arrived) after Jarell Ebuka, came on stage to perform some songs, new, old, and a tribute to Benue State, North Central, Nigeria (Recently the killings and injustice happening in Benue State has taken a center fold with people being more aware of the ongoing negativity and have been calling the government to order.) It was inspired by a spoken word artist Pelomo Ava.

What captured me was her bright, hot pink Aso-Oke mini skirt as she ascended the stage, and it had a cute silk bow knotted perfectly at the back. Here is the twist, its top is a lace top that completes the outfit of Iro and Buba (the yoruba popular attire worn across Nigeria to similar tribes and cultures) in retrospect, Odenose styled an Iro and buba to fit in the modern wave of fashion while keeping it classic.

Her performance and numbers chosen for this event fit the theme of the WMD, year 2025, “Healing Through Harmony.”  Her acts highlighted bad governance, resistance, and bravery. Bravery to dance depite all obstacles. Her sound is very much afro jazz, and her raps flow right through that.

But overall, Odenose’s art and form of expression is rooted in the African culture via music, messages conveyed, and most importantly,  dressing. She just makes everything cooler.
