Sometimes, in the fast paced world of social media and short attention span, one would like to slow down and catch up on something steady for a while. My favorite is the one I have to wait weekly for. Reminds me of the simpler times when you don’t have to binge on everything, well… because you have work to do that requires physical action. Other times, binging is the only mood you want to indulge in. So, from reality shows, comedy, romance, and period drama, Pearls On the Scene has a few recommended shows for you.

Real housewives of Abuja (showmax)
Initially didn’t get a good review on this because RHOLagos was dominant, but while waiting for the next eposide of RHOL season 3 to drop, I decided to give it a chance. And sis, was I glad. The drama. Instigation. Terrible fashion choices and petty fights that escalate into several eposides… it grew on me. And I was glad it kept me company before the next episode of Lagos franchise aired where I get to see my Queens on screen once more.

Real Housewives of Lagos (showmax)
Oh, this season 3 came with new cast, new fights, new enemies and new friendship, and the return of Carolyn Hutchings. Of course, the ensemble included trips to die for, dresses to kill for, and career paths to admire and drama that absolutely never makes sense. We get to have an insight into new cast member Sophie Momodu’s life as an entity and not just Imade’s mum to Laura being drama free this season, Diiadem carrying her business on her head and 2 other cast members that brought in the confusion and heat… my Queen, just put it on your radar. The absence of the former cast mates doesn’t change the dynamics. These ladies did bring the heat.

The Residence. (Netflix)
Give Shonda Rhimes her flowers again. She got me hooked on 2 seasons of Bridgeton and got me to sit all through 8 episodes of her new releases Netflix series THE RESIDENCE. A murder mystery comedy series that engulfs you just by casting Uzo Aduba (crazy eyes, in orange in the new black OITNB, for the way back fans). The bird’ eye view of the White House and the activities of those who keep it running was interesting to see and very, very riveting. You just had to know who killed the victim. Its twists and turns will definitely surprise you. You will have those you root for and those you don’t like. But isn’t that the whole point of a murder mystery; WHO DID IT??

The Exchange (Netflix)
Muneerah and Farida grace our screen in season 2 with more bold moves, fashion choices and power grabbing. We see the hustle culture to be respected in a work space as a woman and also the topic of abuse and power reclaim. New love interests, casts, and feminine competition are just some of the things to look forward to. The Exchange truly looks at women’s predicament on a larger scale on a global note. It’s light in some parts and heavy on others like all good shows. But it is very entertaining.

Different world (Netflix)
Right now, it seems that we are living in a different world from that of our parents because why are houses so frigging expensive???? Anyways this world is different on all planes. Look at the lives of these privileged university kids and just wish a little for simple times. A different world is a comedy spin-off of the Cosby show and highlights important messages that are still prevalent today. If not for anything, watch it for Whitley Gilbert’s style ensemble. Are we obsessed? Oh, definitely. It spans 6 seasons with 22 eposides each. It is a comfort series for those who love comfort.

Dead Talent Society (Netflix)
If there was a movie I didn’t want to see end, it was this. It’s not a horror kinda gal, but this Taiwanese comedy horror had me locked and laughing. It’s fresh, new, and combines influencer culture, reality TV, and “horror.” It looks at death from a non scary perspective and life as well. If you are looking for a light-hearted movie that feels different, this could be it. Think of the animation Coco and think some more.

Abbot Elementary (Hulu)
Great women cast, funny male characters, and Ava, the great school principal. This is a fusion of reality TV, and just plain comedy that highlights modern struggles of being a teacher, young adults, and also looks at the educational system and how it strives to do its best with as little as they get. Never a dull moment. You will love this even if you are a hater.

The Lady’s Companion (Netflix)
This spanish movie has a Bridgeton period drama vibe due to its bright and pastel colors. It kind of intersects between the sound of music and Jane the Virgin show. For one thing, it is aesthetically pleasing to watch for my girlies, and secondly, some drama definitely was unfolding amidst romance, comedy, and feminine urge to be happy in life. Of course, at a point, the chaperones’ dresses were quite a turn-off (why is it dragging on the floor outdoors), and do we need a season 2, really? But generally, it is light-hearted, suspenseful, and a good lady companion when you need something to watch.
On my wait list:
Survival of the thickest

If you love the burst of colors, summer, and fashion, this is for you. Our excitement is the fact that season 2 is out and we can’t sit calm. Fashion meets Harlem is what this felt like watching the trailer. It is out on Netflix now. Haven’t gotten round to watching it. Once settled in and cozy, you will know about it.
Most of these recommendations do fall into really girly category, but, isn’t femininity the core of P.O.T.s? 😉
Cheers to the soft life 🥂
