Oh, the glitz, the glamour, and the beauty that we beheld this month have been highlighted by the recent anticipated AMVCA night event. Who is met gala? Nigerian fashion enthusiasts ate all up and left no crumbs.

Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards (AMVCA) is the annual accolade presented by MultiChoice (Dstv) in recognizing outstanding achievement in television and film. This years ceremony was held in Lagos, Lagos State, Nigeria, on 11th May 2024 and was broadcast live in more than 50 countries. Entries into the award ceremony are films and TV series that have been aired, the previous year.

The entertainment industry and friends show up putting in more efforts into their haute couture that will be displayed on the Red Carpet. 

Pearls on the scene was on standby for not the worst dressed but in positivity, P.O.T.S looked for the best dressed.

Criteria for best dressed are color coordination, fitting, simplicity, photography session, design, and poses. So here are a few of our favorites, amongst multiple others. Let’s start with the one we term Barbie boy:

See Saga Deolu, a former big brother Naija (BBN) housemate, who didn’t go overboard by keeping it simple yet creative. The genius designer, ladelmen, a slow fashion brand, kept it smart, fresh, and colorful. Color coordinating with his dark skin makes the pink pop out. A man who is confident in such a full  vivid color is who he thinks he is.

This was the first look that popped up for P.O.T.S, Nana Adu got us surfing her IG page one more time to revel in her awesome fashion choices and body goals. Nana is an actress, fashion girl, media personality, and influencer.

 The AMVCA outfit was a 3D created and shipped from china with the help of a ghanian fashion guru, Yoli Koomson, paired together with the endless echo hat made by Heidilee the founder of Heidi Lee couture. She is popular on the Manhattan scenes. Heidilee’s clientel includes Beyonce, Jlo, Missy Elliot,  Anne Hathaway, and Lauren Hill, among others.

Crushing hard on soft boy Timini. With a suede look from DEJI AND KOLA and a subtle color match from accessories to shoes, Swanky Jerry really did a great job here. This is probably our favorite swanky styling. Timini is the popular baby boy/bad boy actor on the scene, with the movie he starred in “Tribe of Juddah,” still making numbers.

The glasses really pop up the entire outfit. It was created by Anna Karin karls. It could not have been rocked better. Okay, maybe Snoop Dogg, but no one after that.

Earlier this month of May, Toke Makinwa released her perfume collection in 3 different bottles. If there is a woman setting a standard and breaking it for the better, it is Toke. Toke is a fashion mogul, an author, an influencer, an actress, a podcaster, a media personal, and so much more on her plate. The veekee James symmetrical gown was perfect for her body. Veekee James is a bespoke artiste who has been gifted by the Lord, great talent with fabrics.

They say god deliver the celebrity girlies from snatched waist, but like Faith Morey said, “I have to show what I paid for.” I Stan. This dress looks like it was sewn on her body. It flows with proportion, has the look of luxury and definable twist in ang regular gown.

Elozonam, the nation’s favorite content creator king, wins the photo session with this heavenly look. Draped in all white and pleats is not something you see every day on a man. Jeff Urban, the creator of this outfit, really stepped out of his box to create this ethereal look. It’s a wonderful collaboration as Elo, as usual, wears it perfectly.

Another banger by Veekee James. First thought is, “Who is this perfect proportioned Barbie doll?”. Osas Ighodaro has been on the scene for a while. We remember her early on, as the host of maltina Dance All show, but generally, she’s an actress, influencer, and media personality. 

She lets us know that less really is less but more classy. The brown gown on simple beige background gives the simplicity we have been looking for. What brings this to life are the black lines on each pleated point down to the gown’s end. Sometimes do little, especially right after you’ve done alot of your best. This is one perfect example.  We love to see it.

Ebuka Obi is a public figure and the Big Brother host for years, among other things. He is the muse for the Atafo brand, a fashion brand that never disappoints, and we understand how deserving it is for him. Side note: I personally remember me and my mum always complaining about his short shirts on the Ebony life show that he co hosted with Zainab Balogun and Lolade called “The Spot” but probably it’s because we saw a potential 😅

Ebuka knows the earth is his runway, and goodness us, we are privileged to have front row seats.

The 2 year running, former Miss Nigeria, star of my beautiful life show on africa magic, and ex Big Brother Naija housemate, Beauty Tukura looks like a perfect peach in this full colored peach dress designed by Emagine by Bukola who is a bridal and prom designer as well. It shows because we’d definitely wear this to prom and get the prom queen crown. Her statement piece is by Boz daimonds that literally stands on its own. Was she the best dressed winner this year? Yes, for the second time in a row. Congratulations 🎊 on such feat, Beauty Tukura.

Firstly, check out the color combination of this 3 piece suit. Secondly, the accessories and, thirdly, the dark brown shoe to give it a balance. He deserves to be on this list. No cap!

Sunky Olojari, founder of the Sunky O Lifestyle Company TSOLC, is a public figure and poster kid for nightlife in Lagos. There’s an article by Gentlemen’s Quarterly (GQ) talking more about this. (The link is on his IG page).

Anyways, T.I. Nathan is a bespoke contemporary brand for men as well as women, and he came through with this outfit tailored to perfection for Sunky’s body frame. But it’s not enough these days to just wear an outfit, put on some shoes, and step out, no! Styling, no matter how minor, could be pivotal in an outfit, and that’s where SBR (Styled By Rebecca) comes in. She styled this look quite simple, keeping it classy yet eye-catching.  Who says beige is boring?

It’s a very lovely color on Ms_Dsf. We would say it’s aligning with Sunky’s outfit. Ms_Dsf Dorcas Shola Fapson, ever so beautiful, is an international DJ (getmelittttt), an actress and founder of The Black Skin Bible, a skin care service brand for dark skinned folks.

Her outfit was made by Deji and Kola, the same brand for Timini, but her stylist Frontiersbrand helped bring everything to life as she mentioned on IG thanking him personally “thank you for bringing my vision to lifeeeee, you’re the best). D&K took this assignment quite seriously as this is one of a kind suit made for a woman, and it fits her so well.

Paired with a simple Boz daimond jewelry and a touch of cigar as prop makes this stand out. One thing we love here is the draping of the photo session. It brings out the lost art of simplicity.

Give it up 1 more time for the best digital content creator, Omolayi Wasabi. 👏🏽 👏🏽 👏🏽 

This award deserves no competition. Layi Wasabi is the most popular skit maker in Nigeria with his unique ways of telling jokes and stories through skits via different characters. Why we love Layi, is that he is relatable. 

His Agbada outfit is perfect. Showcasing is roots through fashion is quite on brand for him. His outfit was created by TDA couture in Lagos, a clothing brand tailored for men. Do you know his wristwatch is tailored to fit his Agbada’s color? It’s all in the details, guys. We love the details.

And, the last is the famous Barny Blockbuster Emordi, who is the face behind so many big hits in 2023, and he has evidence to show for it. Styled By man like chu, a fashion consultant and stylist, Barny kept it classic with a classy bow and white collared shirt and brown patterned suit. A brown color that matches a skin tone is always a W. Barnabas Emordi is a cinematographer and 2023 AMVCA Nominee. His big hit movies include Prophetess (2021), The Ghost, and the Tout Too (2021), which are among the two of the highest-grossing Nollywood films. The House of Secrets (2023), Palava! (2022), Hey You! (2022), Elevator Baby (2019), and Superstar (2021) are also part of his portfolio. 

Generally, congratulations 🎊 to all the nominees, winners, best dressed, attendees, the crew of AMVCA and even the viewers who have made AMVCA very relevant in POP Culture today.
