What are we all watching this week? Animation, k-drama, a franchise, rerun, or just the news?
TVs or screens have been embedded in our cultural lifestyle so bad that if we aren’t watching a sports on TV, we are looking at reels on the phone, or playing a game on the laptop, swiping your watch screen, or simply replying mails on your tab. Either way, screens are constantly in front of us.
If you like to use the screen to relax and catch up on binge worthy series and captivating movies, you should see what we have playing when we get time for screen time. Animation, series, movies, and even reruns.

1. Starting with IWAJU: IWAJU is a disney+ original series that looks at an agama lizard with superpowers created by a tech guru, smart enough to protect a young girl. What stands out in IWAJU, other than its Nigerian roots, and the society problems it looks at, is the “Nigerian” accent. Especially of Tola, the little girl (so adorable). The actors behind the voices are top nollywood favorites such as Ireti Doyle, Femi Branch, Bisola Ayeiola and a new face, Simisola Gbadamosi. The story takes twists and turns enough for an adult to be entertained and quite a lot of colors enough for a child to latch on. Watch time for 6 eposides is 2 hours at most. It’s a binge worthy animation.

2. What do you know about Good Times, Black Again? Good Times is an animated reboot of the ’70s sitcom of the same name. The original series centered on a working-class Black family that looked into serious social issues faced by the blacks living in some parts of America. The animated reboot isn’t far off social issues. Mind you, the Netflix animation series is like Rick and Morty meets Family Guy. It is no surprise anyways as Seth Mcfarlan executive produced it together with Netflix. The series was released recently and has garnered quite a few attention, especially P.O.T.s. Actors behind the voices include Marsai Martin, Yvette Brown, Jay Pharaoh, J.B Smoove, and a few guest stars. In as much as its satirically funny, it sheds light on how to positively grow in a an environment that could be dangerous to one and, more importantly, being loved from home. It’s so much fun and action. You won’t want to miss a single frame.

3. Rerunning on the series Devious Maids and Sisssss, drama never looked soooo gooood. While growing up, late 90s, there was this Venezuelan telenovela titled Maria de los angeles, I liked it. It was the maids favorite then. I didn’t remember what was going down, but I knew I loved to watch the series to feel the suspense and see the shock on their faces.

Years later found a couple of series that have that effect thanks to telenovelas series like Jane the Virgin, Telenovela by Eva Longoria and Marc Cherry (producer or desperate housewives and why women kill) style of script writing. He keeps one on edge despite multiple eye rolls. The thing with reruns is that as much as you are enjoying it, you are as well seeing some obvious errors you did not notice before. Like “psssh, I could do better than that.” But could you?

4. Definitely had to catch up with the Nigerian movie Afamefuna. A 2-hour nollywood movie that kept me up till 3am. It was that captivating and very educational. It looks at the igbo business style and how the term “brotherhood” means something to them in business. Did you know a shop owner can train an apprentice for certain years, then go ahead and settle the apprentice with a shop of his own and some cash, and the cycle continues. It’s marvelous to see an extension of growth. Of course, there are themes like betrayal, mystery, romance, and even death. Watch it. It’s quite a conversation starter, like who really killed Nwa boi Paulo? Is it greed or betrayal? Let’s have a discussion on that on my personal IG: madam_mryam.

5. The reason for the season, the series Palm Royal (inspired this blog post) If it’s vintage, it’s worthy of any screen time. Cons is that it gets released every Monday. Out of 10 eposides, only caught up with 8. The wardrobe and the depiction of old Hollywood and old riches are nostalgic. Kristen Wigg stepped out of her Saturday night live clown boots and took a serious kitty heels to fill. She did amazing. The thing that makes this different is that it does not go by the rule book of Hollywood cliche storyline. In as much as you’d like to hate a character, you find it hard. It is honest, rivetng and mysterious. 10 points to Laura Dern.

6. The Sadaus sisters. Well, one thing is Rahama Sadau knows how to leave a mark. With her reality tv series, including her sisters as full cast, we see family time, rivalry, lots of unnecessary laughter, and questionable wardrobe choices. But it’s all good as you will grow to have a favourite and also have an insight into the life portrayal of Rahama and her closed ones. It will keep you annoyed, laughing, crying at maybe one point, and generally, knowing more about Rahama.

Now, that is what is on P.O.T.S rader. We have looked at Disney+, Netflix. Apple TV, showmax and Lifetime TV. Ah! Not to forget; One screen time to look forward to is definitely Bridgeton, coming soon with Ms Francesca Bridgeton making a debut. Part 1 comes out May 16 and part 2, June 13th, according to TUDUM Netflix blog. Look out for Pearls On The Scene recap of the third season ball, happening May 4th, 2024.ย
