If you are familiar with old American sitcoms, like the popular F. R. I. E. N. D. S, Fresh prince of Bel Air, Hanging with Mr. Cooper, Seinfeld and more, then you may have experienced The Nanny and the series may have been your favorite with its catchy theme song, cartoon intro and Nanny Frans wardrobe. The girl from flushing, wasn’t ashamed to be herself had Serious Style with the
“flashy girl from Flushing’s” tight and bright sequin numbers, which were a hallmark of the series.
The show has 2 strong female characters with opposite attitude to life. Yes I am talking about Cece Babcock and Nanny Fran. C. C, Her wardrobe was classy, Independent and to die for. My mother brought the attention to me by voicing it out. I realised I’ve had that thought in my head for a while. Subconsciously, both styles later had an effect on my wardrobe choices, I switch easily from classy monochrome power suits to feminine colorful fitted attire. The 90s has quite the catalog of classy fashion if we deep it.
Cece was the epitome of Androgynous. A role she carried on really well. One would say she was the “modest” looking of all as well as the most fashionable. Her character looked like she didn’t have to go an extra mile, a coat here, a Blazer there, but the amount of work put in to get such an experience back to back, is quite a lot of extra miles or Niles 😂
C.C. Babcock was a woman who understood the power of sharp tailoring, a sleek bob, and a statement earring or neck piece. Her accessories were always complimentary to her attire and scenes too. Replete with shoulder pads, silk shirts, and trans-seasonal polo neck sweaters in a classic palette of camel, burgundy, Grey and black, C.C.’s look somehow defied the gaudy fashion vortex of the late ‘80s and early ‘90s.
Take a look. String of layered Pearls, that red lip color too and a classy black/white mix. Such a concept. Of course, her dressing didn’t have to be inclined to this direction. But being a business partner to a wealthy famous Producer, a woman had to exude power and one of that medium, is through her dressing.
With C.C being the antagonist, we can understand why her fashion was overlooked,This woman wore pantsuits better than anyone. But everyone likes a hero and that was Nanny Fran.
Sure, some questionable styling choices were made when trying to hide her pregnancy in the show’s later seasons, but many of her looks wouldn’t look out of place in a 2022 fashion spread.
To appreciate the style, we also have to appreciate the stylist: Grammy Award winner Brenda Cooper is the woman behind many of the iconic looks that The Nanny cast In general all wore during the shows first 4 seasons. Brenda mentioned how she had to pull an average of 50 outfits per episode. The stylist was heavily inspired by the 40s – 60s. Eventually she added the iconic turtleneck look that Fran would wear under many of her dresses in order to show less skin. But then Cece Babcock was stylishly ahead in that department.
The process of getting these costumes wasn’t easy. Of course, it took about 8-12 hours a day just to shop for the show and about every piece would end up altered in some way to give it a unique touch. To all involved, they pulled a great job.👏🏾
